Beyonce wins big at MTV awards

BEYONCE has scooped a hat-trick of prizes at the MTV Europe Music Awards, dedicating one of them to husband Jay-Z. The 28-year-old singer, writer and producer took home three trophies, for best female star, best song (Halo) and best video (Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)).

Her husband, Jay-Z, won the best urban act category and Eminem was named best male star. The awards burst into life with a performance by Green Day, followed by host Katy Perry's mash-up of the five best song contenders, including Beyonce's hit Halo and Kings of Leon's Use Somebody.

Green Day, the established trio whose punk-influenced tunes have won it fans worldwide, won the award for best rock act, while U2 won best live act, their third win since the MTV Europe Music Awards debuted in 1994. U2 frontman Bono paid tribute to Berlin for its grit and determination.

The band recorded its album Achtung Baby in the city and drew inspiration from reunification to write its hit song One.Lady Gaga was named best new act, while Green Day took the best rock title. The local crowd cheered as German rock band Tokio Hotel won best group. Berlin is the only city to host the awards show twice - in 1994 and this year - a decision MTV said it made to mark the 20th anniversary of the Berlin Wall's collapse.
