The prominent political and religious figures whom he used to make joke of included former U.S. President George W. Bush, ex-Alaska Governor Sarah Palin and the pope. The host of "Real Time with Bill Maher" also mentioned his 26 nominations on Primetime Emmy Award. None of them resulted in a real award.

"I have 26 unused Emmy speeches," he quipped to the attending crowd which included CNN's talk show host Larry King and 20th Century Fox' animated series producer Seth MacFarlane.

The ceremony came on the same day as the DVD release of Maher's Emmy-nominated stand-up special, "Bill Maher... But I'm Not Wrong," and three days before "Real Time with Bill Maher" returns from its summer hiatus to finish the second half of its eighth season.

A stand-up comedy veteran for three decades, Maher is known for his political satire and sociopolitical commentary, which targets a wide swath of topics including religion, politics, bureaucracies, political correctness and the mass media. He is best known for his show "Politically Incorrect" shown on Comedy Central and ABC during 1993-2002 period. He has also hosted a similar show "Real Time with Bill Maher" on HBO since 2003.
